Meeting of the Minister Victor Catan with the President of the European People's Party
Minister of Interior Victor Catan, had a meeting today with Mr. Wilfried Martens, PEP President, being in Moldova for a working visit.
During the meeting, Mr. Catan has informed the European official about the activity of the ministry to advance the process of reform and rehabilitation of the institution, which image has suffered seriously from the events of April 2009 and return of the police in the service of citizens. To this end, has been developed a new conception of MIA, based on respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
However, the high level guest was informed about the measures taken to enhance institutional capacity of MIA and efficiency of activities within the collaboration with the European Community states, being achieved entirely the priorities of the European Integration Agenda for the last year and early months of this year.
Mr. Wilfried Martens expressed his satisfaction with the changes from Moldova, including the resize of respect for human rights and police reform processes. The evolution of relations with the European Union is very important, underlined the official, stating that Moldova needs stability to succeed in achievement of the priorities of European Integration.
Today, the main task of MIA leadership is to bring police activities in line with European standards, to ensure the offensive against criminality, to stop the dynamics of negative trends and of crime in terms of strict observance of the law, said Minister Catan.
At the end of the meeting, European People's Party president, Mr. Wilfried Martens, reiterated the EU position on the continued support of Moldova, expressing confidence that in the country will be established a sustainable stability, which will benefit all citizens and will create real premises for boosting the investment process in Moldova.
